10 Things I've Learnt From Planning A Wedding

So you may have noticed that things have been pretty quiet on the old blog front recently, well that’s because I’ve been planning my wedding! As I also work full time wedding planning seems to have taken the place that writing my blog used to. We get married in a couple of weeks (omg) and touch wood I’m feeling pretty okay about everything. I kind of feel like I’m at the right point to write about what I’ve learnt from the process, because boy oh boy have I learnt a lot. Planning a wedding is an absolute rollercoaster and when I’m on the other side I’ll let you know whether the stress is all worth it (which I’m told it totally is). So without further ado here is what I’ve learnt so far.

1. I’m a real perfectionist. I think I always kind of knew this because of how anal I am around my Instagram images but the wedding has really shown me how I’m not really happy with something unless it’s exactly how I want it in my head. I don’t think theres anything wrong with being a perfectionist but I think maybe knowing when to let stuff go is a good thing to learn as well, which I definitely have through this process.

2. Everything costs a lot of money, like a lot! Because I’ve had friends who have gotten married, I knew roughly how much things would cost, but my god weddings are expensive. If something is for a wedding, expect to pay 3x the normal price you would normally pay. The way that we managed this was we chose the things we knew we wanted to spend the money on and splurged on them and then tried to save on other bits. For example, after the venue we’re probably spending the most money on flowers, but that’s because I absolutely love flowers so much and because of the style of wedding and venue we will have we just feel that they will make such a big impact.

3. Pinterest will become you best friend. I could not even tell you how many hours of my life I have spent on Pinterest, I just know it would be ridiculous. I would say it’s probably one of the best places for getting inspiration from for everything from flowers, bridesmaid dresses to what style of wedding you would want. It honestly is perfect for wedding planning.

4. Rock My Wedding is the best thing ever! After Pinterest I would advise that any new bride to check out Rock My Wedding. On part of their website they feature 3 new weddings everyday and it’s honestly the best inspiration ever. I would say it probably where most of my inspiration for our wedding has come from as they only feature the most stunning weddings and you can see how to style different parts of the wedding. We are planning to have a lot of different sections to our wedding as all the inspiration has either come from this website or Pinterest.

5. I’ve really appreciated the people in my life – I’ve been so over whelmed by how much people want to help with the wedding. My mum has been absolutely amazing, and I’m not sure I could have planned a wedding without her and then my bridesmaids have also been so helpful. People really just want to help in anyway they can and it’s so so lovely.

6. People love to talk about a wedding. This kind of ties into the point above but everyone loves to talk about a wedding. This can be quite hard when you’re having a stressful week but it is also absolutely lovely as well because people are genuinely so happy for you and so interested in hearing about the big day.

7. There is a lot to plan and think about. I know this goes without saying but there really is a ridiculous amount of planning that goes into arranging a wedding. I don’t know if it’s because I’m such a perfectionist but I am planning every single tiny last detail and I think I’m doing this because when I take blog photos I know what a huge difference a tiny thing can make. My plan though is to make sure everything is taken care of up until the day before and then on the day just forget about it and have fun, because I will have done everything I can do.

8. There will be highs and lows. There have been times where I’ve absolutely loved planning the wedding and then times that I’ve been so ridiculously stressed that I just don’t think I can do it all (but I think that is mainly because I also work full time and run my blog and generally have too many things on). Just know though, if you’re planning a wedding and are going through a low it get easier and things will fall into place.

9. If you’re creative you’ll love making all the little bits and bobs. I have to say, my favourite parts have been when I’ve physically been making some of the DIY bits. I love being creative so this has been my absolute favourite part of the wedding, which is probably why I’ve spent so much time on Pinterest!

10. There is a wedding to fit every style. What I found really hard when I first starting was I couldn’t really find a wedding that would work for what myself and Tristan wanted, and then after some research and chatting to people I realised that you can essentially make your wedding fit to you. We’re doing a few things a bit differently but I think it’s important to make your wedding as personal as you can because when it comes down to it, it’s your big day with the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.

So those of the things I’ve learnt so far. I’m planning to do a bunch of different blog posts actually after the wedding as I’ve found other peoples posts so useful, so keep an eye out for those. Also let me know if there is anything specific that you would like to see around wedding content!
