A Guide to SPF

Using a high SPF isn’t just for those with fair skin, everyone is at risk of damaging their skin no matter what skin type you are. When I was younger I used to think that the lower the SPF the better the tan. This is absolutely not true and something I learnt the hard way.

High SPF sun creams don’t prevent you from tanning they just prevent the harmful rays from damaging your skin and actually allow you to stay in the skin for longer. You’re much more likely to develop a longer lasting tan that doesn’t peel if you use a high SPF and keep topping it up throughout the day. When I go away I tend to use factor 30-50 on my body and the same on my face.

The great thing about sun creams these days is that you can get non sticky and clear SPF50 sprays that are much easier to use than a thick, white, gluppy liquid that stays sticky for hours.

I know it’s a pain to apply SPF and it feels like you won’t tan if you wear it, but trust me when you get older you’ll definitely notice a difference in your skin compared to those who frazzle in the sun all day without any protection.

I know when I was younger all I cared about was a tan at any cost, but now that I’m a little bit older and hopefully wiser I know just how important it is to look after your skin and prevent premature aging. Don’t get me wrong I still love having a tan but I now know how to sunbathe safely. I know my future self will thank me for it.
